Preview: Heat vs. Pistons

The Miami Heat are in a prime position to  gain the number three spot in the Eastern Conference. It’s pretty simple, win their last two games and they’re in. Now here is the hard part. Both of those games are on the road in Detroit and then in Boston. Today, we will focus on the Detroit matchup. The Pistons won the first two meetings, but with Miami’s new offense, they blew Detroit off the floor just one week ago.

This is going to be a good game because it is essentially a playoff game for both teams. Detroit is trying to jump ahead of Indiana for the seventh spot and Miami is trying to get the third. The two guys who really hurt Detroit last time were Goran Dragic and Josh Richardson, while Tobias Harris was the main weapon for Detroit. Here are the 3 keys for Miami to win tonight.

  1. Shut down the Jackson/Drummond combo: Reggie Jackson and Andre Drummond have a very dangerous pick & roll combo, which they will do to bring Whiteside out of the paint to open it up inside. The Heat need to communicate well and be prepared to help in the case that Dragic or whoever is guarding Jackson is caught in the screen.
  2. Offensive rebounds: Other then Drummond, the Pistons are not a great rebounding team, so Miami should try and make an effort to gain the edge on the offensive glass, especially if they are not shooting well from the field.
  3. Take the fight to them: Miami did a brilliant job with attacking the Pistons defense with Dragic and Wade leading the way. They need to do so again tonight and do it early in an effort to knock the Pistons back on their heels.

Again, win the last two and they have the three spot. It is going to be a playoff atmosphere in both venues, which will help prepare the young guys for the postseason.

GO HEAT!
